The Photograph as an Art Object Summary
The article begins by stating that a non-photographer (John Stezaker) won the prize for "the most significant contribution to the medium of photography" for his work that incorporated found images as well as a 3-dimensional element. It then goes on to say that the physical altering of images is not something that is new; specifically, other artists have painted on their photographs before. Next we hear about Julie Cockburn who also "not a photographer". Her artistic aim is "to inject layers of suggestion which cause the viewer to embark on n imaginary journey". The article mentions other artists as well but the above quote from Cockburn sums up the main idea of the article quite well. Photography is more than just the image. It is about the different layers that the artist can incorporate and the different things that they can make the viewer feel.
