Final Project Proposal
For my final project I want to take photographs of specific locations that have come to hold specific meanings to me over the past year. Each location will be where some important "event" occurred. I guess I'm getting a lot of my inspiration from Jason Lazarus. I loved his "Too Hard To Keep" show and how each image had a story behind it that the viewer would never know. I want my work to be like that as well; the viewer won't know the story behind each location, just the emotions involved. The most difficult aspect of this project will be capturing the correct emotions as well as adding the physical element to each. I think that the project will also exhibit the ways that I've grown as an artist and photographer because it will allow me to really test my limits when it comes to editing the images to the "perfection" that I wish. My vision for the final prints is to have them be medium-sized. I don't want them to be too large or too small because that would take away from what I'm trying to convey. As of right now I'm imaging them being free of any frames so that the viewer can view them without any obstructions. As for any help that I would need, it will mostly come from the physical aspect of each image. It will definitely be a challenge and I might just need some help brainstorming how to best use the physical element to its greatest potential.
Article Summary
The Photograph as an Art Object Summary
The article begins by stating that a non-photographer (John Stezaker) won the prize for "the most significant contribution to the medium of photography" for his work that incorporated found images as well as a 3-dimensional element. It then goes on to say that the physical altering of images is not something that is new; specifically, other artists have painted on their photographs before. Next we hear about Julie Cockburn who also "not a photographer". Her artistic aim is "to inject layers of suggestion which cause the viewer to embark on n imaginary journey". The article mentions other artists as well but the above quote from Cockburn sums up the main idea of the article quite well. Photography is more than just the image. It is about the different layers that the artist can incorporate and the different things that they can make the viewer feel.
